Bahnhof's unique computer center "Pionen" is centrally located in Stockholm, 30 meters into the bedrock below the Sofia Church. Basically, the Pionen White Mountains are an upgraded version of a nuclear-safe shelter that the Swedish civil defence used during the Cold War. With a boast-worthy uptime of 99.9%, it's any site owner's dream! (Provided they follow our Terms of Use and Acceptable Use Policy, that is)

Said to be hydrogen-bomb proof (not kidding!), as eco-friendly as possible, and perfectly redundant with several hardware RAID backup disks, you really couldn't pick a better place to store your data. The network has full redundancy with both fiber optics and extra copper lines with three different physical ways into the mountain. Pionen is one the best-connected places in northern Europe. The only possible concern: power failures. But at Pionen everything is planned for, so much that in the rare case that the main power supply and generators fail at the center, there are two diesel-powered German submarine engines on site to power the servers for days! Backup power is handled by two Maybach MTU diesel engines producing 1.5 Megawatts of power. The engines were originally designed for submarines, and just for fun the people at Pionen have also installed the warning system (sound horns) from the original German submarine. Cooling is handled by Baltimore Aircoil fans producing a cooling effect of 1.5 megawatts, enough for several hundred rack-mounted units. Bahnhof's carrier network has several advantages for customers with high demands on traffic capacity, redundancy, and reliability. Today Bahnhof carrier network consists of Scandinavia's fastest fiber connections branching from a few hundred Nordic cities. Bahnhof is also one of Sweden's largest metropolitan Internet service provider, active in hundreds of Swedish cities. Internet traffic can terminate in any of Bahnhofs data centers, and can be controlled, and monitored via Bahnhof's operating center in Pionen in central Stockholm. Not to mention, this underground data center has greenhouses, waterfalls, German submarine engines, simulated daylight and can withstand a hit from a hydrogen bomb.

To top this all off, CloudFlare's severs learn as time progresses. If there is a big change, then our system automatically starts to investigate whether it is legitimate traffic or an attack. If it is not legitimate traffic, then the system automatically starts to learn and starts to stop the new threats at our edge nodes, before they hit the site's server. Not only is that information helpful to the site in question, but it gets shared across the entire CloudFlare community so everyone benefits.

Here is a fantastic visualization of CloudFlare getting smarter in action. One of our user's site was under a denial of service (DDoS) attack earlier this week. You could see the surge in traffic. Then, soon after, the CloudFlare system starts to learn from the change in data and start identifying that the new traffic is indeed an attack, rather than a surge in legitimate traffic. As CloudFlare starts to identify the new traffic as an attack, the system starts to block it at our edge nodes around the world. This means that the site is safe from the attack, there is less load to their server and legitimate traffic to their site is totally unaffected.

All new! Our servers now run the LiteSpeed Web Server, which has been proven to be twice as efficient as Apache, the leading competitor! As well, Litespeed Web Server's PHP performance is up to 50% higher than Apache mod_php.Using the optimized LiteSpeed PHP-SAPI you can get up to 30% more performance out of FastCGI-PHP and have the flexibility of changing the PHP configuration through .htaccess (same as with mod_php).

PHP under LiteSpeed is also more secure, as it runs PHP suEXEC without any performance loss. Allows setting per user security policy like open_basedir via web server configuration. LiteSpeed Web Server can operate with an Apache configuration file. Most commonly used Apache features have been implemented. Some Apache-compatible features including .htaccess, mod_rewrite, mod_security, and mod_frontpage are available exclusively on LiteSpeed Web Server and cannot be found in other light-weight web server software.

.htaccess cache
With LiteSpeed Web Server, commonly used directives in a .htaccess file work exactly the same. According to many benchmarks, .htaccess files add a significant delay to serving pages in Apache. To eliminate this delay, LiteSpeed employs an intelligent caching system to automatically update configuration when changes to a user’s .htaccess file are detected.

mod_rewrite
LiteSpeed Web Server's rewrite engine is fully compatible with Apache mod_rewrite so there is no need to change rewrite directives when you switch to LiteSpeed. The rewrite engine is highly optimized and increases speed over Apache's rewrite engine, especially for rewrite directives in a .htaccess file.

mod_security 1.9/2.x compatible request filter
LiteSpeed Web Server Enterprise Edition allows the use of mod_security configuration within your httpd.conf. Unlike the Apache and mod_security combination, LiteSpeed Web Server is built to implement rule sets in a more efficient manner and allows specialized grouping of related rules for an even greater increase in performance.

mod_frontpage
MS FrontPage Server Extension is supported by LiteSpeed, allowing users to mount the directory containing web pages as a Windows shared folder. This feature is exclusive to LiteSpeed Web Server, Apache and Zeus.
